During my tenure as an architectural historian, a significant portion of my responsibilities involved working with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to ensure compliance with federal Section 106 regulations. This hands-on experience provided me with invaluable insights into the development of state road projects and the profound impact that FDOT initiatives can exert on local communities. Delving into road plans and examining the long-term transportation strategies for our district (FDOT District 2) and our state, I honed the ability to assess proposed road improvements’ potential ramifications on our community’s cultural fabric.
In essence, I became fluent in the language of transportation, adept at navigating the intricacies of FDOT procedures. Armed with this expertise, I am committed to enhancing our county’s roads while safeguarding our distinct identity. I firmly believe that fostering a collaborative relationship between FDOT and Alachua County is essential for creating safer and more efficient roadways. I am eager to leverage my experience to cultivate these partnerships and drive positive change within our transportation infrastructure.
The rapid development in western Alachua County has brought about significant growth, but not without its challenges. Throughout my master’s research in historic preservation, I’ve delved into numerous cities and crafted redevelopment plans aimed at preserving the essence of communities – their historic structures, natural surroundings, cultural assets, and more – all while fostering sustainable economic growth. My involvement in public art initiatives has often been a part of broader strategic plans geared towards enhancing overall community well-being.
We needn’t emulate the sprawling urban landscapes of South Florida, nor should we settle for cookie-cutter neighborhoods resembling those found elsewhere throughout the South East. I am passionate about collaborating with local developers and builders who call Alachua County home, ensuring that our developments reflect the best of our community’s vision. After all, these local stakeholders will shape the character and functionality of our neighborhoods for the next half-century.
Through collective effort, we can safeguard our distinctive identity and precious environmental resources while crafting communities that resonate with our values and aspirations. It’s an achievable goal, provided we are committed to working together towards a shared vision of vibrant, sustainable living spaces.
